Class Information
Backpacking Classes & Overnight Trips
Introductory backpacking course for all ages and all fitness levels. These classes are for those who want to strengthen their skill base, deepen their connection to the wilderness and build their confidence in the outdoors. Learn the basics from trip planning, equipment selection, camp craft, nutrition and camp cooking, shelter and site selection, map reading, and outdoor ethics. Students are encouraged to take a hands-on approach and learn cooperatively with their classmates, sharing their experience and enthusiasm. At the end of the in-class training, you will pack your backpack, lace up your hiking boots, and put your knowledge into practice with an overnight backpacking trip in the forest.
Canoe Classes and Overnight Trips
Learn to read the river, identify and avoid river hazards, basic self-rescue techniques, canoe handling skills, and proper strokes. For overnight trips we will teach you how to pack your canoe and camp along the river following Leave No Trace guidelines. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a skilled canoeist, our classes and trips are designed to take you at your current skill level and help you build on that knowledge.

Basic Navigation with Map and Compass
Learn to read and interpret a topographic map and to use a compass in order to “stay found” in the forest. This class is designed with the beginner in mind. You will receive instruction and practice the following skills: Reading the information provided on a map, understanding contour lines, measuring distance using map scale, parts of a compass, orienting a map with a compass, taking a bearing and following a bearing. This class is beneficial for anyone who spends time in the forest!
Route Planning and Navigating with Cal-Topo
The purpose of this class is to learn to use the computer-based program, CalTopo to explore, plan, and create custom routes and maps. Then, access those maps, navigate, record your hike, and add data on trail using the CalTopo phone app.....even on Airplane mode. Never wonder if you've made the right turn again! Bring your laptop for hands-on instruction.
Note: The Navigating with Map and Compass workshop is highly recommended as a prerequisite.
Safety in the Outdoors
This workshop will introduce a risk assessment and safety management model. Then that model will be applied as we investigate the most common dangers and hazards in the backcountry and explore steps to mitigate those risks.
Topics will include: encounters with wildlife (snakes, bears, insects, etc.), lightening and weather related hazards, toxic plants, water crossings, sketchy humans, hazards in camp, sound decision-making, and more.
Outdoor Survival Thrival Skills
"Survival" skills have captured the imagination of many armchair adventurers, but do you know the actual skills needed not just to survive but to thrive in the outdoors? In this hands-on workshop we will focus on what you REALLY need to know. Topics will include the 10 Essentials, creating a shelter, finding and purifying water, fire building, signaling, navigating, and more.

Sunset Hike
Don’t miss this casual hike to a beautiful location in Pisgah National Forest to enjoy the sunset. Clyde and Jayne’s extensive knowledge and experience on the trails means you will have a hike tailored to your ability level and interests. We guarantee you will learn something you didn’t know about the area, and hear stories that will entertain. Join us and get connected with the natural world, learn something new, and enjoy the company of others who love the outdoors.
Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop
This is an introduction to the seven principles of Leave No Trace. Even if you have a basic understanding of the concept of Leave No Trace, this workshop will provide a deeper understanding of recreational-related impacts and how Leave No Trace skills and ethics can help protect the outdoor places we love. This workshop will be experiential, fast-paced and have tips for a variety of outdoor users: hikers, mountain bikers, rock climbers, backpackers, etc.
Backcountry Cooking
This class will have your mouth watering. Learn how to prepare delicious meals and desserts in the backcountry. Also learn safe stove operation, and clean up procedures that following Leave No Trace guidelines. All materials and ingredients are provided. Just bring an appetite. Participants help prepare and eat the dishes made in this class.
Guided Wildflower Hikes
Come with us and celebrate the extraordinary biodiversity of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This easy hike will be an exploration of the wildflowers currently in bloom in Pisgah National Forest. We will hike on easy terrain and move slowly so we can examine and appreciate the foliage around us.
Participants should come prepared to hike in any weather, so wear comfortable shoes that protect your feet, bring a rain jacket, and water/snacks.
