Canoe Skills Self-Assessment

Trying to decide if you already have the skills to paddle with us? Answer these questions to determine if you need to take our Canoeing 101 Lake & River classes.

1. Have you ever had any formal canoe instruction?

2. Are you proficient in both the bow and stern?

3. Can you read river features and maneuver the canoe down the best course?

4. Do you know river hazards and how to avoid them?

5. Can you perform the following strokes: forward, back, draw, cross-bow draw, pry, sweep, j-stroke, forward with correction?

6. Can you perform the following maneuvers in a canoe on the river with a partner who may be new to canoeing? Catching an eddy, pealing out of an eddy, ferring across the river, s-turn, and self-rescue.

If you've answered no to ANY of these questions, you need to take our canoe classes before signing up for an overnight canoe trip. Please contact us if you have questions.
